As a self-proclaimed minimalist, I try to keep my house tidy and organised. This means that I try to be mindful of the things I purchase and bring into my home, but … I’m only human … so there’s always things lying around that I don’t need anymore.
Every time I try to get rid of something though, there’s this little devil on my shoulder that says
“But what if you need this next week/month?”
Clutter storage
This little devil is a sneaky one but a few years ago I found the solution to keep him quiet: I created a place to ‘store’ my clutter before I actually got rid of it. And whenever I’ve stored something for at least 6 months, I can safely tell that little devil: “See I really don’t need it anymore”.
I’ve simply dedicated a closet in my living room to this clutter storage, but it could easily be a corner in your garage or attic. I do recommend that you pick a spot that is easily accessible, so you can easily put stuff in there (don’t allow yourself any room for excuses!).
Organise your clutter storage
Now, if you have this dedicated space in your house, you’re well on your way to a clutter-free house. But if you want to take it one step further, you can even organise your storage into 3 categories:
- Stuff to donate (to charities or friends)
- Stuff to sell
- Stuff to throw away
I simply use a couple of these transparant storage bins to keep my clutter storage tidy ;-)
